Inspired by this comment here what information do we have on Naomi's father (from Megillas Rus)? Apparently his name was Avi-Naomi but was that his real name before Naomi was born? Who was his father?

How do we know his name was Avi-Naomi? – Double AA Nov 7 '12 at 18:13
@DoubleAA see edit – yehuda Nov 7 '12 at 18:20
Okay... how, then, it is apparent? – msh210 Nov 7 '12 at 19:29
yehuda, I see he's called avi Naomi, but I don't understand why you say that's his name. – msh210 Nov 8 '12 at 15:30

Rabbi Chaim Kanievsky in his Sefer טעמא דקרא brings down that from the Gemoro Bava Basra 91a that he was the son of Nachshon ben Aminadav ( and a brother of Elimelech).

the gemara here is where he is called "avi naami" and nothing more. is there a place in the chumash which lists all the sons of nachshon so his identity can be deduced via process of elimination? – Dan Nov 7 '12 at 21:19

@Dan The only child of Nachshon mentioned in Tanach is Salma/Salmah/Salmon (presumably all the same person) in Ruth 4 and I Chronicles 2 – Double AA Nov 8 '12 at 6:18

Nachshon had four sons: Elimelech, Salmon, Ploni Almoni, and Naomi's father. Some say that Ploni Almoni's name was Tov. Apparantly, Naomi's father's name is not recorded in Tanach.

Can you explain how you know this? – Double AA yesterday
@DoubleAA, I can't, of course, say how Jerry Lane knows it. But it is in Bava Basra 91 (except the bit about P'loni Almoni's name, which I think is in the m'far'shim on the verse "im yig'alech tov yig'al" (which I may be misquoting)). – msh210 yesterday
@msh210 Well, yes, it says that (the former statement) in the other answer. – Double AA yesterday
Yes. If that is, indeed, Jerry Lane's source, then the only part of this answer that actually answers the question is a duplicate of the other answer, so this answer is redundant and can be removed. If Jerry Lane doesn't supply a source, then the same holds. No offense, Jerry Lane, but, well, there's no point in having two answers that say the same answer from the same information source. By all means edit the other answer to add more info. – msh210 yesterday
