The custom dates to the 14th century, with Sefer Minhagim (Yitzchak Tyrna). Keter Shem Tov , 3rd chelek, (in Hebrewbooks.org it's page 22)suggests the minhag was directed at those who might otherwise … be unfamiliar with the text's vocabulary or meaning.
