Ad 1: _Torah T'mima_ says  that were he not afraid to differ from all previous commentaries, he'd say the plague of darkness was cataracts on the Egyptians' eyes. He uses this to explain what it means when it says that the darkness was "thick" (specifically, "thick as a coin" as the _midrash_ (in the _g'mara_, I think) puts it).
