Numbers 4:18 reads: אַל-תַּכְרִיתוּ, אֶת-שֵׁבֶט מִשְׁפְּחֹת הַקְּהָתִי, מִתּוֹךְ, הַלְוִיִּם how should I understand the combination שֵׁבֶט מִשְׁפְּחֹת? My translation reads: Cut ye not off the tribe of the families of the Kohathites from among the Levites
Are the Kohathites a tribe formed by their families, which should not be cut off from the Levites? Or does this verse means to teach that the tribal family of the Kohathites (from all the families of the tribe Levi) shoudn't be cut off from the Levites? Or did I get confused by my translation and should I understand this verse in another way.
