The traditional Passover song "Echad - mi yodeya" implies a possible presupposition that there is a Jewish significance to be found for each natural number. Accordingly, there is an ongoing series on Mi Yodeya that is attempting to unearth significant Judaism facts about each number, in sequence.

What significant Judaism facts are there about the number 337? The more significant within Judaism and the more intrinsically dependent on the value 337, the stronger the answer. Please include sources for your information wherever possible, as with all other answers on this site.

Answers that are cheap like lazy gematria are not preferred.

The entire Halel is recited eighteen days a year in Israel: the first day of Pesach, the day of Shavuos, the seven days of Sukos, the day of Sh'mini Atzeres, and the eight days of Chanuka. Thus, in a non-leap year in which Marcheshvan has thirty days, so the year has 355 days, there are 337 days the complete Halel is not said in Israel.

Before I explain anything, 337 is 352 minus 15.


a) 176 is the number of פסוקים in Tehillim 119, and when reciting Tehillim for a deceased individual, the eight verses corresponding to each letter (22*8=176) of the deceased's name are recited. Thus, it symbolizes individuality and uniqueness.

b) Parshat Nasso, the longest Parsha, is 176 פסוקים, and it emphasizes the specialness (if that's a word) of every person, hence the twelve-fold repetition of the קרבנות of the נשיאים. Thus, it too is proper for recitation.

c) The 15 שירי המעלות, which are said in times of distress (such as a funeral/memorial), are about the collective nation of Am Yisrael.

It is proper to add the two 176's for an answer of 352, and then subtract 15 to get an answer of 337, for a number meant to show how unique, how pure, how beautiful each נשמה is.

Also, on a more out-there note, the Gematria of 'Gematria' is 263, and 337+263=600. 600 is represented by the Hebrew letters ר.ת, which, in a common grammar construct, can have the second letter of the root doubled (see Rashi here on the word ירט.) Thus, רת becomes רתת. There is a פסוק: כְּדַבֵּ֤ר אֶפְרַ֙יִם֙ רְתֵ֔ת נָשָׂ֥א ה֖וּא בְּיִשְׂרָאֵ֑ל וַיֶּאְשַׁ֥ם בַּבַּ֖עַל וַיָּמֹֽת׃

One can plainly see that the last word of the פסוק is וימת, which means '(and) he died'. This proves the conclusion above.
