How do you shake the arba minim according to the Rambam?

3

From his Laws of Lulav, chapter 7:

ויוליך ויביא ויעלה ויוריד וינענע הלולב שלש פעמים בכל רוח ורוח. כיצד מוליך ומנענע ראש הלולב שלש פעמים ומביא ומנענע ראש הלולב שלש פעמים וכן בעליה וירידה

and he should move it to and fro and up and down, and shake it three times in each direction. How? He moves it to and shakes the tip of the lulav three times, and moves it fro and shakes the tip of the lulav three times; and the same for up and down.

  • Do you have a video or something? How do you shake the tip of the lulav? – far22 Sep 30 '15 at 16:45
  • @far22, your guess is as good as mine. Perhaps one of the commentaries on the Yad discusses it, but I didn't have a chance to look into that. Or perhaps the Rambam would allow any method of shaking the tip of the lulav. – msh210 Sep 30 '15 at 18:55

It should be noted that the actual mitzvah is simply lifting the set up together in one's hands. The shaking is custom, and any mistake in shaking or lack of shaking does not preclude the mitzvah being accomplished. – David Kenner Sep 30 '15 at 19:45
  • @DavidKenner, you're right AFAIK about what the mitzva is, but I'm not sure why it should be noted here specifically. The question above asked not how one fulfills the mitzva according to the Rambam but "How do you shake the arba minim according to the Rambam?". – msh210 Sep 30 '15 at 19:52
  • @ msh210 that's why I made a comment, not an answer. I saw it as a comment that had to do with the general idea. Many people I have seen assume the shaking is D'oraisa and not just minhag. – David Kenner Sep 30 '15 at 19:57
