Is it permissible to put Soup Mandels in hot (Yad Soledes) soup on Shabbos, assuming the soup bowl was filled in a standard way - pot taken off of fire, soup ladle inserted into pot and soup removed and put into the bowl in which it is served.

  • @DoubleAA, I don't know the manufacturing process for these. In addition ... – Yishai Jul 9 '14 at 22:11
  • They are deep fried, AFAIK. I don't see why your link is relevant as the heat doesn't melt anything here. – Double AA Jul 9 '14 at 22:14

Yes. You can even put it in a cli rishon that's off the fire.

שקדיות מרק ... הנמכרות כשהן מוכנות לאכילה, מותר לתת אפילו בכלי ראשון, אם אינו עומד על גבי האש...

Soup mandels ... that are sold ready to eat, it is permissible to place them even in a cli rishon, if it is not on the fire. (Translation mine)

When the pot is taken off the fire, it is still a kli rishon. The soup ladel is a kli sheni and the bowl a kli shlishi.

However:

  1. If the soup ladel gets as hot as the soup it may be a kli rishon as well.
  2. Not everybody holds of a kli shlishi.
  3. If the soup has a davar gush in it, e.g. noodles or kreplach, the davar gush may be treated like a kli rishon. It is unclear if that changes the status of the soup.
  4. If frying is like cooking, the rule ain bishul achar bishul should apply.
  5. If frying is like baking, it is a machlokes whether there is bishul achar afiyah.

As such, it depends on what you hold and how machmir you are on Shabbos. Either way you have who to rely on. IIUC, most people are lenient.

  • Not everyone agrees a ladel is kli sheni. See Taz YD 94 – Double AA Jul 9 '14 at 23:14
  • Who holds deep frying is like baking??? – Double AA Jul 9 '14 at 23:14
  • @DoubleAA actually, i don't remember. :( Maybe i'm remembering incorrectly. Also, i think there is a difference in whether the oil completely covers the item or not. – please delete me Jul 9 '14 at 23:26
  • The question about whether frying is like cooking or baking is only when there is a little oil in the pan. However when you cook something in oil, what is called "deep frying" in our parlance, there is complete agreement that this is considered cooking – Jewels Jul 10 '14 at 5:55
