Is the Mitzva of Tzitzit an obligation on the clothing or on the person?

1 Answer 1

Person. You don't need to have tzitzit on a tallit that you keep in a drawer.

Not only that, but you don't even technically have a chiyuv to purchase a four-cornered garment in order to put tzitzis on it (Rema, Orach Chaim 17:2), though Hashem deals strictly with one who uses that loophole, as the Gemara there says.

  • Are you implying that if a person wears 10 pairs of Sisit he is only being mekayem on mitzva? Jan 8, 2012 at 4:34
  • @HachamGabriel Why can't I be obligated in the same mitzva multiple times? Consider mezuzah...

  • @DoubleAA I'm not arguing, I'm asking if each one is separate sechar/mitzva. I'm not in such a lumdisheh mood right now :) Jan 8, 2012 at 4:55

@HachamGabriel Do people buy houses with the most number of archways/doorways they can find? Most number of accessible roof levels?
