Due to the current health crisis, all shuls are closed. As a result, the weekly Torsh portion will not be read.

After this is all over and synagogue services are resumed, will we:

  1. Continue where we left off
  2. Omit the missing weeks and continue the universal weekly cycle
  3. Catch up the missing weeks to continue with the regular cycle.
  4. Or what?

Sources are appreciated!

I don't think option 1 is likely, but included it for the sake of completion – chortkov2 Mar 29 at 16:10
  • There’s also the option of catching up only the most recently omitted portion – Joel K Mar 29 at 16:23

There is no such thing as a universal weekly cycle. This is an error in metzius. Every location follows its own cycle. There are different practices in different communities. – Double AA Mar 29 at 18:55
  • @chortkov option 1 is the halakha. Most everything about Torah reading is minhag. The only halakha we have in shas is מקום שמפסיקים בשבת שם קוראים לשבת הבאה. – Double AA Mar 29 at 19:41
  • @DoubleAA so (1) and (3) are equally halacha, except that (3) has the advantage that you have more fun on the second day of Shemini Atzeres – Heshy Mar 29 at 20:11

The Rama to Orach Chayim 135:2 writes that if a whole tzibbur missed last weeks laining they should lain both this weeks parsha and last weeks. With regards to a tzibbur missing many shabbasim it is a machlokes.

The Mishna Brurah 135:6 brings both opinion. One holds that they make up every single week missed, and according to the other opinion the tzibbur should only make up the last week missed. This seems to be favored by the Biur HaGra.*

The Aruch Hashulchan 135:6 holds that many missed weeks should be made up.

The Siddur Yesodei Yeshurun page 414 brings the Chida, Magen Giborim, Maharam Shik, Zichron Yonason as those who allow for making up many missed parshiyos.

  • Great answer. can you add in the caveat of being in the same seder? – chortkov2 Mar 29 at 17:45
  • No no the gra held like the aruch hashulchan and lemaaseh read 4 parshas when he was released from jail. – Double AA Mar 29 at 18:54
  • @DoubleAA where is that gra brought down? – Asher Mar 30 at 0:24
  • It's a Tosfos Maaseh Rav on Maaseh Rav,its not mashma like that in his actual halachic writings in the Biur HaGra where he compares to tefillah. – sam Mar 30 at 0:29
