Am I able to make a siyum on a mesechta that I learned by listening to audio lessons without actually reading any words inside?

It appears that "shomea keoneh" wouldn't apply to audio recordings, so it's not clear whether listening to audio lessons would qualify as real Torah learning that one can make a siyum on.

  • Have you seen how many audio recordings have been around for Daf Yomi? They've been there for years! Do you think all the participants at the latest Siyum last week who listened to audio made an invalid Siyum? – DanF Jan 10 at 0:28

Does this answer your question? Does listening to Torah content count as the mitzvah of Talmud Torah? – DonielF Jan 10 at 4:02

Re duplicated, the rules of a siyum are different from the rules of talmud Torah. For instance, it might be talmud Torah to listen to a shiur on the parasha but you cannot make a siyum on it. – mbloch Jan 10 at 4:13
  • @DanF - yours is an excellent question! – Tesvov Jan 10 at 10:36
