A somewhat general question that I'm sure will have a specific answer.
I'm wondering, doesn't mental illness nullify our free will? Can we say those that hallucinate, living in seemingly completely different worlds, really have much choice in this life?
Also, if we accept that people suffering chronic conditions don't have the capacity to make decisions, how should we deal with them in legal matters? Would it look similar to the standard western and secular courts that, instead of sending them to prison like those with able minds, would send them to a psychiatric hospital?
- Finally, what would be the halakhic way of treating these people?
Thanks so much for your help, Yossi
