Do we know of any of the burial places of Rishonim around France and England? I know Rabbi Yisrael Meir Gabbai has found some but are there any tools to source ancient Jewish cemeteries e.g. a map?

R' Jacob of London (AKA "R"i of Orleans") a student of Rabeinu Tam, was killed in the riots during the coronation of King Richard ("the lionheart"). He is cited on numerous occasions in Tosefot across the Talmud.

His resting place is somewhere in an empty garden behind some buildings in the centre of London, in a neighborhood called the Barbican.

His Yahrzeit is just before Rosh Hashana, and a small pilgrimage of frum Jews is made on that date every year.

(It is frankly astonishing how little-known this is.)

Source - well worth the listen

The old jewish cemetery is in the barbican area en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Barbican_Estate but I don't think this claim is correct that his unmarked grave is in a particular empty garden. He may have been buried somewhere in that cemetery but who knows where exactly (and that's still an 'if')

  • It's interesting, I looked into it a bit more and it turns out that the cemetery boundaries have been marked on maps for centuries... it was called Jews' Field or something like that. It's true we don't have a precise grave location but it's still pretty good, considering ~700yrs.

It is unlikely that there are any Rishonim buried in England, if there is there are not many. Many Rishonim are buried in France though. - Rashi - Rabbeinu Tam - Rashbam - Ri - The Radak many others.

The Ri meorleans was murdered in London, so likely buried in a graveyard in the UK. Unfortunately unknown. R'yom tov mi joingy was murdered in York; although we do know where the York cemetery is it apparently the victims of that massacre were not buried there

  • Not the Ri meorleans, I am talking about Ri HaZaken, Rashi's son. Commented Jul 22, 2019 at 19:03

I assume the Ba'al Tosafot Anglia is buried there (en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tosafot_Hachmei_Anglia)
