Jan 4, 2018 at 2:12 comment added Monica Cellio I interpreted the correction as "not specifically a whale but any kind of dag gadol", as opposed to "not a whale". That is, by saying "whale" you're being more specific than the text, and while a whale would fit there might be other candidates too (even more if the creature is not natural).
Jan 4, 2018 at 1:15 comment added רבות מחשבות I have heard that before from people trying to sound knowledgeable, but as I demonstrate below, Dag Gadol can clearly mean a whale.

Sep 15, 2013 at 15:28 comment added user3114 Interesting question. in Zevachim, 22a: Raban shimon Ben gamliel says, anything created from water can be immersed in, Dav Yitzchak bar a vdimi says, you can immerse in the eye of a fish. Rashi- a Dag Gadol. I'm no taxonomiSt, but, Halachically, everything created from water has a similar status, at least as far as immersion. On the other hand we know that fins and scales are a defining factor for kashrus. I think there is definitely room to say that it was a whale, though.

Sep 15, 2013 at 4:56 comment added Double AA I've heard whales are not kosher because they lack scales, not because they lack split hooves.
Sep 15, 2013 at 3:58 comment added Seth J @ShmuelBrin, Thanks, yeah, I saw that. Not interested in what it might have been (unless some source says was it definitely was). I just want to know if someone notable says it definitely wasn't a whale.
