Dec 21, 2015 at 7:10 comment added Publius @Fred I'm not a lawyer also, but my understanding is that this is a fair characterization of the law; the requirement imposed by the Civil Rights Act is that an employer make "reasonable accommodations" for employees' religious belief.
Dec 21, 2015 at 6:37 comment added Fred @Avi If working on Shabbos is essential to the job, and it would impose an undue hardship on the employer to allow the employee to not work on Shabbos (not just marginal inconvenience or office politics problems), I think it may be legal for the employer to fire her for not working on Shabbos. Anyway, most jobs don't meet this relatively high legal threshold to fire a religious worker, and it's not fair to anyone involved for a religious Jew to try to get a job with an employer that does meet that threshold. (Disclaimer: IANAL).
Jul 28, 2013 at 4:32 comment added Publius If you live in America (and likely in other places), she can't be fired for being unable to come in on Shabbat. That would constitute religious discrimination.

Jul 19, 2013 at 17:22 comment added msh210 What does "for" mean in "This job is for goyum (religious Christian) that are unable to understand her religious faith"?
