Let's say you aren't sure which Berachah to make on a food before you eat it. Generally the rule of thumb is that you make the most specific Berachah that you know will capture the essence of that food. For example, if you aren't sure whether a particular fruit you want to eat is a "tree" fruit or a "ground" fruit, you would make a Borei Peri HaAdamah, which is generally said on "earth" fruit, since, even if the fruit is a "tree" fruit, the tree grew from the earth. You wouldn't force a Borei Peri Ha'Etz, which is said on "tree" fruit, because if you did you would be at risk of making a Berachah that doesn't apply to the fruit, which would leave you eating a food without having given proper thanks. You also wouldn't necessarily automatically say SheHaKol NiHyeh BiDvaro, which is said on all foods that don't fit in a more focused category (such as most drinks), because you know that this fruit is, at least, a fruit that grew from the earth.

By contrast, if a fruit, even a "tree" fruit, is cooked or ground (as in reduced/pulverized), it loses its "fruit" status altogether and falls into the catch-all category whose Berachah is SheHaKol.

In addition, generally speaking, some saysome say you ought to make a Berachah on a solid food before a liquid beverage.

What if: you are about to eat a fruit, that is definitely a fruit, but it's somewhat ground up and you just aren't sure whether it retains its fruit status or has lost that status, and you intend to make a SheHaKol on that food just to be safe. You also have a cup of tea or coffee that you intend to drink. This drink definitely gets a SheHaKol. But now if you make a SheHaKol on the food, will that exempt the drink? Conversely, if you make a SheHaKol on the drink, will it exempt the food?
