See also the ramban who explains that they weren’t trying to replace G-d, but Moshe. And the calf was a physical representation of the face of the ox on G-d’s chariot, and that it wasn’t until after the sin of the golden calf that they were forbidden from creating depictions of angels and other spiritual being. | |
