If you consider that in the context of things like dybbuks or malicious spirits, etc., it becomes clear. Also, concerning your other posted question, “desire” תאוה, transcends intellect. The common English translation of “lust” is not how the Alter Rebbe or the Rashab, in תרע׳ב explains it.

One point to emphasize, the Ari z”l states clearly that the Jewish body is the Animating Soul. It is not the external crust which is commonly called our body. That body is called גוף הצואה. Also, pause to reflect on the teachings you have seen about the Animal Soul. It does not possess human intellect, but animal intellect. That emphasis holds a great deal of meaning.
Nov 30, 2023 at 12:13 | comment | added | Rabbi Kaii | @YaacovDeane Rav Pinson has a nice mashal that a soul is like a radio program in the form of the frequency being broadcast in the radio waves, and the body is like a radio tuned in to that channel, allowed it to "talk" and express itself in the physical world. I really liked that. When the radio breaks, the frequency is still being broadcast, we just can't hear it anymore
Nov 30, 2023 at 12:11 | comment | added | Yaacov Deane | @RabbiKaii as I understand it, the Nefesh HaBehami is somehow connected to the place of burial. This is one of the ideas associated with setting up a ציון, a marker. That aspect has some sort of investiture (enclothment). It is also in the Universe of Souls but has a connection to that point. Regarding “consciousness”, yes. I am not certain about active, as in capable of interacting. I am inclined to think not because it is not unified with the other 4 aspects.
Nov 30, 2023 at 12:00 | comment | added | Yaacov Deane | The 5 aspects of soul, once they are not unified via the body, lose their ability to interact directly with the material world that we occupy. Awareness of what is transpiring on this plane and even learning about it, in the Universe of Souls is possible . But for most, they cannot interact directly.
Nov 30, 2023 at 7:58 | comment | added | Moses Supposes | I mean can a dead soul access seforim, shiurim that were online etc and all other information because Hashem is omniscient and the soul is attached to Him? R' Kaplan mentions that it has some kind of share in His omniscience, which seems to imply that. I was also asking whether software can be accessed as well - eg can a dead soul use something like ChatGPT, or does the "active state" of Hashem's memory only apply to human souls and not other information?
Nov 29, 2023 at 23:32 | comment | added | Rabbi Kaii | @YaacovDeane not 100% sure if this is what he is asking (but I want to know what you have to say anyway on this): does the nefesh bahamis/chiyunis remain conscious and active (on whatever plane of existence even though we can't understand it properly now) between death and ressurection?
Nov 29, 2023 at 23:22 | comment | added | Yaacov Deane | If you mean by “data”, knowledge of this world, the short answer is yes. There are numerous sources both from Talmud, Midrash and kabbalistic sources which confirm this. I tried very hard to understand what you are asking. In terms of your specific question(s), it might be helpful to everyone if you made a concise set of bullet points in brief, clear language.
Nov 29, 2023 at 21:45 | comment | added | Moses Supposes | Thanks for this, but I'm not sure that it really addresses the main/first part of my question, which is whether data/information is accessible to departed neshamas, whether it could also be in an "active state" in a similar way to a neshama.
