Jan 3, 2023 at 14:42 comment added Lesley @ninamag - The assignment I received was not from an academic school but from a person who submittted a question on this subject, and it was given to me to answer. I had hoped to get input from a Jewish source but that was not forthcoming. I did the best I could and submited my answer based on my independent research. I do this work voluntarily and for no reward or accreditation. It is a labour of love. I am not a professor or doctor of theology, but just a student who is happy to learn and pass on information to those who seek. I hope that does not offend you.

My question was not specific enough
Dec 29, 2022 at 15:37 comment added Lesley @Heshy - Sounds to me like climatic conditions and temperatures in Jerusalem going back to the destruction of the third temple might be the basis for an answer!

Evidence of research and further information
Dec 22, 2022 at 18:28 comment added Fred By the way, on second examination of Bava Metzia 93b, it may be that the guarding by night aspect was what was beyond the call of duty (in a place where it is customary for hired shepherds to sleep in the town at night), but that guarding in inclement weather is a requirement.
Dec 22, 2022 at 18:27 comment added Fred @Lesley It's possible; sometimes bounties can draw attention to a question. I would recommend providing more context to your question, namely where you saw this "school of thought" and "counter-argument". Including the background helps others do research, and including your motivation helps others focus their answers.
Dec 22, 2022 at 15:20 comment added Lesley @Fred - In your opinion, do you think this question might get an answer (or two) if I activated a bonus? And should I edit my question? If so, what would you recommend?
Dec 20, 2022 at 18:43 comment added Heshy The weather today (December 20) in Jerusalem was high of 66 and sunny, according to Google. Sounds to me like a nice day to be outside.
Dec 20, 2022 at 17:52 comment added Lesley I would be grateful if you could explain. If my question is off topic, how can I fix it?
Dec 20, 2022 at 17:50 comment added AKA Although there is an agenda here, not sure it's technically off topic...

For the avoidance of doubt.....
Dec 19, 2022 at 9:45 comment added Lesley Interesting comment. But were the shepherds outside in the fields in winter with the sheep that were to be sacrificed in the Jerusalem temple (prior to A.D. 70)?
Dec 19, 2022 at 1:14 comment added Fred Genesis 31:40, describing the lengths to which Ya'akov went to guard Lavan's flocks, implies Ya'akov guarded the flocks in inclement weather: "הָיִיתִי בַיּוֹם אֲכָלַנִי חֹרֶב וְקֶרַח בַּלָּיְלָה וַתִּדַּד שְׁנָתִי מֵעֵינָי". The Talmud (Bava Metzia 93b) indicates that this was beyond the call of duty for a hired shepherd.
