Should a Jew who doesn't believe in G-d observe the commandments? From a Talmudic/Midrashic point of view. |

Is belief in a G-d a commandment? I appreciate the sentiment avi, but I agree with LazerA; whether or not it is insulting to anyone, if it is an established approach, it is worth noting. I might add that I am an atheist and do not believe in any gods. If the statement is insulting to anyone, it would be to me, and I find it curious, but not offensive. |

Is belief in a G-d a commandment? @SethJ: Again, I disagree. It may well be that you would see little meaning left in your Judaism without recognizing this, but not everyone is the same. There are many (I personally know quite a few) Jews who do not have any metaphysical beliefs whatsoever and who nonetheless take a great deal of meaning out of their Judaism. |

Is belief in a G-d a commandment? @msh210: That does quite well I think. I'm not saying there's a right or wrong answer, I just think they are interesting and worthwhile questions to ask. |

Is belief in a G-d a commandment? @msh210: Do they define him? Perhaps not, but they are certainly a valiant attempt. I used qualitative language because, to me, the definitions are not clear. If you believe G-d is a well defined "object," would you please provide your definition? |

Is belief in a G-d a commandment? I agree that the fact that many people believe something does not necessitate it's truth. Nonetheless, your statement indicated that recognizing particular things (i.e. necessity of a source/ fine tuning) are ways to work at recognizing G-d. I am telling you that I have studied the necessity of a source and found that it is not needed and that I have studied the claims for "fine-tuning" and found them to fall short. These arguments may support a belief in G-d in your mind, but they do not do so for everyone. |

Is belief in a G-d a commandment? I find your reasoning appealing. It does, to my mind, beg the question "How do you define G-d?" A parent is a well defined (more or less) object. Even amongst ardent believers, I find that G-d is less well defined. |

Is belief in a G-d a commandment? And yet for many people who have deeply studied the nature of the world it appears that there does not need "to be a source of the world's existence, or that the universe is too fine-tuned to have happened by chance." Why do you claim that "Judaism is meaningless" without a belief in G-d? I do not believe that claim is justified. |

Is belief in a G-d a commandment? @avi: A little bit of both I guess. I am most interested in the broader question of "Is it a commandment to believe in G-d?" but it seems like the Ten Commandments played into that broader conversation. I am also interested in Spinoza's excommunication for heresy but that seems like a question for another day. |

Do Jewish law or tradition say anything about addressing incorrect statements made by others? Thanks, I like it. Unfortunately it's not easy to figure out who knows he's wrong and who's genuinely confused. |
