comment Is maaser calculated pre-tax or after-tax?
In a similar way, if your boss says I'm giving you $50,000, but I'm keeping $15,000 of it so you only get $35,000 and you have no choice in the matter, then why should you pay Maaser on the $15,000?

The main part of the argument is that you never had that money. It was never in your hand. To give another example, if I tell you that I am giving you the Brooklyn Bridge, but you can't sell it, you can't charge any tolls or do anything else with it, then do you have to pay Maaser on it?

comment When (if ever) are converts still related to their relatives?
Of course, in practice, conversion is a very complex area of Halachah and one needs to consult not just their local Rabbi, but an expert in these laws.

I should also note that the laws between parents and children who convert can be complex. Even though Yichus is severed, a convert who has had children before converting may still be considered to have fulfilled the Mitzva of Pru U'Revu, and a child still may have obligations to their pre-conversion parents even if the parents don't convert.

CYLR, I think their is some leeway for a convert to choose what they want to be named, but in general, yes "bas Sarah Imeinu" would be correct.

comment How are Spartans the son of Abraham?
While I know of no source for this, it would make sense since the dominant characteristic of Edom is that they "Lived by the sword." I can't think of any society that exemplified this characteristic more than classic ancient Sparta.

comment Saying Mashiv HaRuach in the Southern Hemisphere
As far as Mashiv HaRuach goes, you're arguing with R' Yehoshua (Ta'anis 2b) who learns that it IS a seasonal request and we don't mention it out of season because rain then is a sign of G-d's anger (chas veshalom).
