Well asked. The question has always troubled me too. BTW Joseph Karo (1488-1575), author of the Shulkhan Arukh, possessed a maggid that identified itself as the voice of the Mishnah and of the Shekhinah. I was once told that for this reason keeping the Shulchan Oruch was a very powerfeul segulah!!

@Fred If he can't learn aloud, then he must use the best method for him, as you suggest. I know of one academic young man who went to Yeshiva and was given a room to learn in on his own.
