Vacuuming during the Nine Days Neither had I, 'till I heard it... |

Vacuuming during the Nine Days The logic was that the cleaning accomplished by vacuuming a carpet is the same level of cleaning that occurs when one washes a garment. The person who I heard this from is a respected Rov, who I don't think would so easily misunderstand the issue. Perhaps the original psak was in regard to shampooing a carpet, but that would probably be obvious that it's forbidden. |

Who wrote the 1950s-era super-patriotic Prayer for the United States of America? If it doesn't appear anywhere else, that would seem to be the case. |

Who wrote the 1950s-era super-patriotic Prayer for the United States of America? It turns out that he simply modified the standard "HaNosein Teshuah" formula to address the president and vice-president. This prayer was said for many generations, referring to whoever happened to be in power at the time. For the history and some interesting images, see tinyurl.com/4duxyo. (A random source in Hebrewbooks, referring to Czar Nikolai: tinyurl.com/36shzxc.) |

Modern nations and Umos Haolam With regard to the first four, it is pretty clear that these were meant as "nicknames" rather than actual identities of peoples or places. For a nice discussion about this, see here: mavenyavinarchive.blogspot.com/2006/12/… |

B'rachah on Shiluach HaKen There is discussion about that point... R' Chaim Kanievski deals with it in his sefer Nachal Eisan, I believe he is the one who decided that it should be "L-" rather than "al". |

Custom to refrain from eating meat at the Pesach Seder? I assume you say "Ashkenazim" in the sense of people from communities originating in Germany. (Ashkenazim in general certainly do not have a custom to refrain from eating non-roasted lamb.) |

Custom to refrain from eating meat at the Pesach Seder? Thanks for that answer! It seems to me that Taz was merely postulating the existence of such a custom in order to resolve the words of the Tur, but he was not personally familiar with people or places who in fact acted that way. I wonder if Yahu is correct about this stringency being "mined" from the Taz without an actual basis in tradition. |
