comment Horse back riding for women
@user6591, you are free to think so. I wrote this answer in 2012, before Freundel's sins were made public. Should I delete it now? Is the logic less compelling because of the source?

comment What is the difference between Maharat and Yoetzet Halacha?
I acknowledge that this is poorly sourced. Suggestions on how to source it would help.

comment When Sofrim write Sifrei Torah, do they think of the Ba'alei Kri'ah (readers)?
Rabbi Shneid. He lives in Monsey and came in once per week to teach his course at nights.

comment How does Judaism regard homeschooling?
I think you missed the best Talmud quote in support of unschooling 'ein adam lomed ela b'makom sh'libo chafetz'. "A person learns only what his heart desires." This supports the unschooling model of the child following his/her own interest and learning what they desire.

comment How does Judaism regard homeschooling?
I know a few people who have homeschooled their children because day schools were not easily available where they lived. But unschooling strikes me as a different question.

When I took a course in safrut at YU the teacher said we certainly should consider the baalei keriyah. He suggested that shuls send baalei keriyah to look at a text before purchasing it (or presumably at the sofer's past work).

comment Do surgically removed body parts require Kevurah?
My father-in-law sent me a link which I cannot find now to a book of interesting beit din decisions. A family sued a burial society because they refused to bury a person without payment. The family claimed the deceased paid to be a member and be buried. The society said he had used his right as a member to have an amputated leg buried and if he now wants the rest of him buried, he must pay.

comment Can a Jew join Christians in saying grace before meals?
As a hospital chaplain, I have gone out for lunch with my Christian colleagues a number of times. Presumably in deference to being a group that wasn't only Christian, those praying offered a prayer that could still include me, directed to "G-d" or "Holy One". I had no trouble saying "Amen" at the end. I also said the appropriate bracha, though quietly.

comment Why do some prayers require you to stand?
@MonicaCellio some siddurim (Artscroll included) say one should sit when reciting the verses of kedusha (kadosh, kadosh kadosh etc) outside of kedusha, such as in birkot keriyat shema shel shachar, uva l'tzion and in motzaei shabbat maariv.

comment Nudity at home?
I can't say I have ever merited to understand that bit of Shulchan Aruch. G-d can see me in the shower as well, but I can be nude there. G-d can see through my clothes. So what that G-d can see me?

comment What's so moving about Kol Nidrei
Putting a powerful tune at the beginning to get one in the mood seems emminently reasonable. It is why Borchu at night and wherever the chazzan for Shacharit starts tend to have extra singing of the seasonal tune. I know that hearing the Yamim Noraim tune at the first kaddish of selichot gets me into the Rosh Hashana season.

comment Sharpening Shechita Knife on Chol HaMoaed
@SethJ, one who knows well how to sharpen the knife likely won't forget if he fails to practice for a week, but perhaps the novice would. Alternatively, if he plans to take his shechita bechina soon after yom tov acharon, and so he wants to be sure he is in good form and practice on chol hamoed? (Say there is an expert shochet in town for Sukkos. Isru chag, this student will take the bechina and if he passes, stay in town as the shochet. But the baki is leaving on Isru chag later in the day.)

comment Onot perisha with birth control
@DoubleAA, in some packs, there are placebos to take, mostly to stay in the habit of taking the pills. Granted, it is the not taking active ingredient pills, not the taking of placebos that cause the period, but one could argue "Taking the third green pill" could be an onat maaseh.
