8 vertices, 12 edges, then how many "sides"? does each face have two, making 12 total?

similar: six are the tribes on the left shoulder, six are the tribes on the right shoulder (of the Cohen Gadol of course)

comment Why do Jews physically resemble members of their “host” nationalities?
I would tend towards a 99-100% genetic explanation, with almost no contribution from cultural/diet/environment. Those may indirectly explain the differences between races evolving over thousands of years, but the fact that Syrian Jews all born and bred in Brooklyn are still easily distinguishable from their Ashkenazi neighbors is due to genetics. And within the genetic answer, my hunch is that conversion historically played a very small role, while intermarriage and other, more violent variants were the dominant factor in genetic mixing.

why aren't parsley, onion, and potatoes ha'adama? what are some guaranteed haadamas? tomato? those would taste good with a little salt water. and cherry toms are almost certainly less than a k'zait

comment Kosher accommodations in out-of-the-way US places
that thread reminded me of the kosher B&B in Newport, RI. I've never been, but have heard great things about the town wrt vacation, and also of course there is the famous Touro Synagogue, which has davening on shabbos. AND there are direct flights from BWI-PVD via Southwest

comment Best practices for praying in public with talit and tefilin
After hearing about the NY flight, I did exactly this on a recent trip overseas. I davened shacharit w/o tallis/tefillin on the plane, then mincha with both at the hotel. My kavana was vastly improved, without worring about disturbing neighbors or scaring flight attendants. In fact, I find I can do some of my best davening on a plane, since I typically have tons of time, nobody is bothering me, and there is a very real (even if remote) possibility of imminent death.

Yes on (1), no on (2). I find that explanations almost always seem to cause more confusion than not.

comment Experience-based advice for focusing and slowing down prayers?
I was going to suggest Nusach Sefard also, but was wondering if there are any halakhic implications? I know that if you are in a shul davening Sefard, than you can also, even if you regularly daven Ashkenaz, but if you are Ashkenaz in an Ashkenaz shul, is there room to change minhag?

There are also many kosher hotels in the Catskills, but if being surrounded by frum Jews doesn't feel like vacation, then you might have a problem.

comment What would you really, actually like to receive (give?) for Mishloach Manot on Purim?
I once got a bowl of soup handed to me for mishloach manot in yeshiva. talk about urgency!

comment Who hides the afikoman?
It definitely keeps them awake and interested in something, but it also distracts away from "the main point". Unless the main point really is just to keep them awake and entertained. As the father of young children, I know this really does have value, since the kids get excited and look forward to pesach, which literally gets stamped on their consciousness for years to come

I would add Sefer haChinuch, Pirkei Avot with commentary (Reb Bunim highly recommended), and for those particularly interested in Tanakh, a Concordance.

comment Is it inappropriate to be overdressed for prayer (davening)?
I have also heard this guideline mentioned often, and really never see it followed in practice. Would any "normal" person shuckle and shake before a head-of-state? Is there any room to argue that we do not need to be concerned about outward appearances before Hashem, Who can see through the physical and directly into the spiritual?

comment What are the halachik issues involved in drawing from a nude model?
this is not really an answer, but I will take the opportunity to recommend Chaim Potok's novel "My Name Is Asher Lev" about a young chassidic prodigy artist struggling with many related issues. The sequel, "The Gift of Asher Lev" was a major disappointment.

if it is silver, make sure to polish afterwards, then wrap in cloth, and store in an air-tight bag until next year.

comment What's a good technique for a not-so-strong person to do [Ashkenazi] Hagbaha?
I just tried to down-vote this answer, and then realized that I couldn't, because it was mine. I guess I will have to look harder for other smarmy, sarcastic responses.

comment Turning off a stove on Shabbat
What about an oven? As far as I understand, one can turn the thermostat on your wall up or down, as long as it prolongs the current status, i.e. up when the heat is on, down when it is off. Would the same apply to an oven, if there is no food inside?

comment Moving muktza garbage cans?
I imagine it depends what kind of muktzeh it is: mius, muktzeh machmat atzmo, etc? And also WHY are you moving it? do you need the space (i.e. they are blocking traffic), or do you need the cans back? And this makes me wonder: can you move muktzeh l'tzorech makom, if the "tzorech" is doing a melacha (e.g. driving a car in the driveway)?
