About what were rabbis ahead of the times? @msh210: like I said, it's a bit of numerology. I guess you have to think of some unique naming system, so permutations of the alphabet seems as good as any. |

How did the moon shrink? Yes, if the moon were at the L2 Lagrange point, it would always be full, while if it were at L1, it would always be new. While it is impossible to remain exactly at these points, since they are dynamically unstable, we have put satellites around L2 in special "halo orbits" that are relatively stable. |

What to do with the candles during Havdalah My favorite explanation is that it hearkens back to Adam and Eve, who were given "kitonet or," which is darshened as "clothes of light" but there is also a medrash that says they originally were covered in hard armor scales like fingernails, and after the cheit we given the soft skin we have today. By inspecting our fingernails, we are reminded of the first Shabbat and Motzei Shabbat. |

When do you say a beracha on a minhag? I agree, but that doesn't warrant a down-vote, but I think rather a non-vote. |

How to tactfully circumvent opposite-gender handshake I agree with Jake and Yaakov. Isn't there a Torah prohibition against lying? |

Is Rashi really pshat? I had always felt that Rashi was more into drash, and Ramban was the pshat-focused commentary. |

Hagala for a new pot btw, I would like to use this opportunity to say Sultam pots are fantastic! We have a whole set and they are still in great shape after 7 years. |

Lego on Shabbos in view of a number of similar active questions, it may be worth reminding everyone of the message in red print at the top of this page. For questions like this, one should always consult their own Rav. |

May a Katan (minor) perform Melachah (“work”) on Shabbath? I've also heard it is violating the positive mitzvah of chinuch. I have seen cases where a parent will not ask their own child to do something, but have a different adult ask them. (although it sounds like this is also a problem!) |

12 hours to the day, 12 hours to the night definitely related to the lunar cycles: 12 months gives 12 constellations in the annular cycle, which also cross the sky every night. Except the 12 constellations take 24 hours to go around, so I'm off by a factor of 2 somewhere... eh, astrology and astrophysics are both order-of-magnitude estimates. |

Eclipse of the moon, bad sign for the Jews Interesting answer, but I am personally not much convinced by the odd combination of mazal and science. To a certain extent, I think this is at the root of the recent controversies with R. Slifkin and the authority of Chazal. |

Overcharging or Undercharging (Ona'a) but market value is defined by what people will pay for it, so it is a bit of a catch-22 |
