I think another problem is that I'm looking for anecdotes about people not very well educated about Judaism and if this problem exists outside my family asking the community to speculate why this is the case. I edited the question a bit to better reflect my original intention, but realized some of this looks like speculative discussion probably more appropriate for the wiki. Tech questions are much easier to write :)
