Why can people write Torah sheBal Peh nowadays? Though it seems originally (in the centuries after the Amoraim) they didn't write new things. |

The origins of davening The Gemara in Brachos (reffered to in the question) has a full discussion of the topic. It says the anshei kneses hagedolah instituted prayer. It cites 2 views as to what the tefillos correspond to, the avos or the korbanos, but in the end it says e/o agrees to the korbanos answer. |

The origins of davening I don't know if they had to have those aspects, they were separate things. Just pointing out they did have some. |

The origins of davening The korabnos were the Avodah. Tefillah became its substitute, and had those aspects. However, the korbnanos had some of them also, since they had the levi'im sing shevach & hoda'ah while they were brought, and some required viduy. |

The origins of davening 1. Prayer was instituted as a substitute for the korbanos. 3. They did not necessarily pray, but they did gather together. |

When does one stay up all night? I think the artscoll biography of R'Yakov Kaminetsky mentions how in Europe they used to stay up Friday night learning. In fact, they would make shacharis later to allow the people staying up more time to learn! |
