comment What does Heimishe mean?
@JoshuaFox I'm not sure why you're not comfortable classifying Artscroll and Aish Hatorah as Litvish?

@SamGoldberg Tuna Beigel is a derogatory term for someone that grew up full on chassidish but is now not as chassidish anymore. They still have the thick accent, however they trim their beards, thin out the payis etc. Heimish people typically grow up in an environment where speaking english isn't frowned upon, getting a high school education isn't the worst thing in the world etc. I know it doesn't sound all that different, and when I speak yiddish myself, people have often asked me if I grew up Chassidish. The main distinction is that I didn't grow up in a full on chassidish environment.

@JoshuaFox I guess I'm doing a bad job of explaining as Artscroll and Aish Hatorah are very far from Heimish. You can really think of Heimish as "chassidim without the garb", that's really the closest thing to it. Our customs and practices are very similar to that of chassidim, but are lax on some of the stricter things. We are definitely NOT litvish by any means, that's for sure. Like I said "mixed up" :)

@JoshuaFox One more thing, here's a way you can identify some heimish people: If you see a guy that's clean shaven, and looks totally litvish, yet he has a chassidish havara and goes to rebbes, he'll typically be heimish.

@JoshuaFox It really is hard to nail down specifics because in spite of what I said earlier that most people these days have chosen a path, they will still identify themselves to some degree as "Heimish". So you could have a clean shaven guy that wears jeans & would go to college, and a guy with a beard and shtreimel that speaks only yiddish, both call themselves Heimish because of the way they were brought up and because of their background. It really isn't its own entity anymore and it depends on their current circles and environment.

comment What exactly is the story behind the person who wrote the Akdomus (said on Shavous)
You just brought back all kinds of memories. I completely forgot about the ending with the tree and the millstones. Thanks you.

comment Difference between jewish and zionist?
@Yaakov: Absolutley! Go to bnei brak, there's a HUGE and beautiful satmar shul. There's a HUGE kehila, with both boys and girls schools that are FULL. They however are very much anti-medina. They are of the only schools where there's NO hebrew spoken, and everything is in Yiddish. No one can argue the mitzvah of diras e"Y.... Even satmar doesn't have the chutzpah to argue with the Rambam ;)

comment Difference between jewish and zionist?
@Yaakov: Every satmar chosid would agree that ERETZ Yisroel is the holiest of holy, and that dira's eretz yisroel is a big Mitzvah. None of them would argue that. The issue they have is with the MEDINAS Yisroel, the idea of having a Jewish State, a home, before Meshiach comes. Therefore, this sentence is wrong IMO: "...but do not think that Jews belong there before the redemptive process has completed"

comment 2.4 million killed according to Rashi in B'shalach. Why does no one talk about it?
Thank you so much for that article. It touches on all my questions, and is the first real article/drashah I've ever heard on this topic that actually makes sense. I would upvote you twice if I could!
