comment Bracha for Quinoa
is something given a 'mezonos' bracha due to mesora or due to a definition of what items get a 'mezonos' bracha applied to it? If mesora, then quinoa would be ha-adama.

comment What does “the Talmud” mean in the Talmud?
Did you go to college? If not, this is kind of hard to explain. But in colleges there were sylabus/class notes that were taken by student(s) in the past that became unofficial course text. I'm not talking about test questions and answers, just lecture notes and expansions on those. It wouldn't surprise me if back then there were "notes" and there were "Notes!"

comment History of 9 Teveis
I think in a comment to Shulchan Aruch Orach Chaim that lists the known fast days and happy days, by 2 Major poseks in the first half of the 1800's, is the first printed mention we have. I think one of them was Rav Frankel of Worms. Rabbi Leiman has a couple of lectures on it but i didn't take notes.

Take a look at a sundial. They are all round, but even if they were parallelograms one would get the point. It is easy to divide a circle into close to equal halves, and those halves into close to equal halves. And one could do so with a simple stick. Getting from 4 pieces to 12 could be done without too much skill, but getting from 4 to 10 takes some work. And it just one of those happy coincedences of life on Earth that the Earth is @24,000 miles around :-)

comment how does one get 10 “Lost Tribes”?
How was the lot in Yehoshua temporary just for Shimon??? I just started Yeshaya, when I get to Divrei haYomim again I'll try to remember to look out for this mention of Dovid haMelech kicking out Shimon.

Yochved would be pointing to the possibilities of the future, Yaakov a place holder for the past. oh, and hopefully it was a typo but Yehudas oldest are -not- counted.

in Sefer Yehoshua, Shimon does not get a segregated portion but is dispersed among Yehuda's portion.

This looks good at first run through. A couple of notes: not so much that Yocheved would be 130 when Moshe born but over 120 when Miriam (who is supposedly the first born) is born! And when you type this up nicely, clarify that Er and Onan are not included in the 70 count. And a point which might help strengthen your idea - if Yocheved is counted as part of the 70, then Yaakov is not.

Wait, so you are saying the Ramban held that Miriam was not Yocheved's first child? The Ramban held that names could not be reused before Yetzias Mitzrayim? Giving birth after 130 seems to me to a mircale extrodinaire and worthy of mention regardless if predicted. Guess I'm firmly in the Ibn Ezra's camp on this one :)

comment Bowing at Modim D'Rabbanan
the extremely vast majority of people that i have seen, across the gamut of nusachs, follow the Ari Zal in bowing only at the start. So I would suggest it is safe to take that position :-)

comment 'Goshen' was where?
If Goshen is in the NE of Egypt and above the Yom Suf , then they could have just left "en mass". No way that the Egyptians could have secured the whole eastern border of Goshen against a million people leaving. But if it is in the S/SW, then it becomes much easier to "pen" the people in.

ok, thanks for the fuller explanation. I didn't notice the envelope icon being mentioned in the docs.

comment 'Goshen' was where?
I mentioned to someone that the maps of Mosdei Rav Kook and The Living Torah position Goshen in the NE of Egypt . The reply was that if Goshen is not in the midst of Egypt (ie: South) than the plagues not affecting Goshon is not that big a deal. So on the one hand you have Yosef/Yaakov not wanting the Family to have to go through & be in the midst of Egypt but on the other hand you have the 'miracle of plagues not in Goshon' factor. (btw: Goshon being NE would explain that Yosef did not wait for Yaakov to come to Egypt & reach Goshen before greeting him - coming to Goshen = coming to Egypt).

comment Why Didn't Yosef tell Yaakov He was Still Alive?
my answer is similiar. Yosef is called "Yosef haTzadik" because he did not take revenge on his brothers. However, Yosef did not know he would not take revenge until after the Yehuda speech at which point he realized he had no desire for revenge. Telling Yakov where he was and then taking revenge on the brothers would not be much of a kivud av.

comment Calculating shabbat candle lighting time
@Dave , sunset in the Washington Heights is considerably later than in the Lower East End of Manhattan in the summer time. The full sun can still be seen in the Heights when the official time for sunset has occured for the Lower East End. (I asked a couple of poseks about that and was told to pretend I didn't ask)

Thanks. So much for my opus. I had noticed that the Haftorah also had a case of darga not followed by tevir.

comment Calculating shabbat candle lighting time
Keep in mind that one is not allowed to start Shabos at a later time than the community's latest starting time. So if you "prove" that candle lighting should be 3 minutes later than the time that the community lights, you still can not start Shabos later than when the community does if you proof is not accepted. But if you are on the road or stuck in an airport outside of a city, start calculating - You may even want to use Rabeinu Tam time :-)
