comment When did people living for 900 years start to look old?
Interesting question! I heard something about the reason Pharaoh asked Yaakov his age was due to his aged appearance.

comment Dating through the Rabbis?
Thank you for your response. The Rabbi himself did not make the match - the gentleman was already interested in the lady after someone else suggested the match. Is it considered improper if a man directly asks a lady out on a date?

@Yishai This is in a Modern Orthodox community. The Rabbi himself did not make the match - the gentleman was already interested in the lady. Is it considered improper if a man directly asks a lady out on a date?

comment Is a dinner party gift muktza?
Thanks. Is it problematic if a non-Jewish guest brings a gift and drives to the dinner party?

comment Can a person convert if they are living with a non-Jewish person?
Hope the Beth Din will be understanding! With regards to bisul olam, we cook separate meals with her being a vegetarian so we don't really share meals together. I've considered the extra appliances but that's costly too... Worst case scenario, I'll have to wait until she is in a position to move out.

I don't think I have a choice but to kasher appliances every time. I can't kick her out, she has nowhere to go.

Yes, I live within walking distance of the shul and there is an eruv. I don't have a TV (still getting settled after moving) & we don't usually turn the stereo on. I only have one sink so it's already complicated. Perhaps I can try the separate basins thing? This is a relative who needs a place to stay, and I can't kick her out. I really want to convert and increase my observances but I don't want to impose on her either. She does her laundry & cooks on Shabbos but I can't make her shomer shabbat just because I am. I've sacrificed a lot for her - just want to do something for me for a change.

comment Do women also wear white on Yom Kippur?
Ok - the women at my Chabad shul and the other orthodox shuls wore white as well. Yom Kippur publication at Chabad shul encouraged everyone to wear white and men to wear a kittel...

@JeffreyLevine thanks for the good wishes, and Shanah Tovah to you as well! I will ask the Rabbi about Yizkor.

I doubt that will be an issue. It's a Chabad shul and I've yet to see a woman opening the ark. Furthermore, Rabbi knows that I'm converting.

both, confusing sorry. I will be fasting and I have not yet been assigned a personal Rabbi. I've been attending services at a Chabad shul and I know the Rabbi doesn't do conversions so I don't want impose on him by asking him...

comment Does someone maternally Jewish, but without documented proof, need “giyur l'chumra”?
@RabbiMichaelTzadok , would one be issued with a 'certificate of Jewishness' if it is found that they are of matrilineal Jewish descent? How is that recognised? Also, what if along the line the ancestors deviated and practiced avodah zarah? I read that if a Jew decides to return to Judaism after idol worship, they have to immerse in mikveh, so is this required of someone who later discovers that they are of Jewish matrilineal descent?

comment Non-Jews & Shul Access
Thank you. The reason I posted this question is that despite my repeated calls and requests to visit a shul, they have not yet said I can visit. I don't know why. I really want to convert, I went into debt to move into walking distance of this shul and I'm not a secret 'Messianic'. I have since been attending services at a Reform shul because that beats staying at home, but I don't feel that I'm getting the full picture + there are too many 'Messianics' there.

comment Matrilineal descent & Zera Israel
@msh210, yes I am asking if the person fits the definition of Zera Yisrael since their status as a Jewish person is in doubt but it is acknowledged that they have Jewish ancestors. Thank you

@msh210 I tagged halacha because I thought matrilineal descent renders one "halachically Jewish" I apologise if this was offensive to you or if I am incorrect, and I have since removed the tag.
