comment How did the 2 spies which Yehoshua sent have authority to save Rachav and family
Still, when the spies promised to save her and her family, they stipulated some conditions....and converting wasn't one of them (at least it's not clearly mentioned in the psukim there) - so then the question would remain: how could they sware?

interesting, but to me Bereshit 47:31 still sounds more likely...

comment What is Rashi proving with words in different languages
@TamirEvan actually I covered myself in my answer by saying: "unless some earlier source had already made the connection - like R Moshe HaDarshan".... but anyway I'll see if i can find examples

comment What is Rashi proving with words in different languages
@TamirEvan I think I can find more examples but I agree that Rashi usually is basing himself on a source. But still, all this means is that our question is removed from Rashi... but the question still remains on Rashi's source - what does a word in a foreign language prove (to explain a word in the Torah)???

@TamirEvan see Bershit 25:20 (Padan), Bereshit 35:8 (Allon) Shemot 12:9 (Na) ... do you have a source for these?

@Menachem this explanation from the Be'er Mayim Chaim may be a source for the answer which I suggested a while back

@DoubleAA I have the feel that you do actually know what I mean... please edit my question if you feel that it would remove ambiguity

comment Do Jews believe the content of Maccabees (I-IV) is true?
@DoubleAA there's clearly a difference. The Torah was given by Hashem - so it's true. However it's not always to be taken literally- we need to learn the oral Torah to understand it. However the book of Maccabees was written by an (unknown) man with his own (possibly warped/bias) views. Who says we should take it as being true?

comment Do Jews believe the content of Maccabees (I-IV) is true?
I mean: could a believing Jew read this and take it for-granted that the content is true. If it had haskamot from leading Rabbinic authorities (like Rishonim/Acharonim) then I would say yes.

comment squeezing lemon juice onto slush on shabbas
@DoubleAA: The terms for food/drink used regarding the laws of squeezing is Ochel/Mashkeh (like in Birkot Hanehenin) however regarding Bishul / Baser VHalav the term used is davar yavesh/davar lach... so it seems fair here to use the definition of Ochel and Mashkeh.
