@DoubleAA I have the feel that you do actually know what I mean... please edit my question if you feel that it would remove ambiguity

+1 thanks.. is there an online version of Doros Harishonim to take a look?

@DoubleAA there's clearly a difference. The Torah was given by Hashem - so it's true. However it's not always to be taken literally- we need to learn the oral Torah to understand it. However the book of Maccabees was written by an (unknown) man with his own (possibly warped/bias) views. Who says we should take it as being true?

I mean: could a believing Jew read this and take it for-granted that the content is true. If it had haskamot from leading Rabbinic authorities (like Rishonim/Acharonim) then I would say yes.

+1 that's a really interesting answer... but wouldn't this still be considered 'miracle oil' ?

comment squeezing lemon juice onto slush on shabbas
@DoubleAA: The terms for food/drink used regarding the laws of squeezing is Ochel/Mashkeh (like in Birkot Hanehenin) however regarding Bishul / Baser VHalav the term used is davar yavesh/davar lach... so it seems fair here to use the definition of Ochel and Mashkeh.
