Rather, [on the basis of my understanding of the Gemara sources - that they refer to future generation trend as well] - I was just wondering why these sources wouldn't help in answering your question.

Also @DoubleAA, I think that the Gemarra is stating a general trend - of yeridat hadorot - not a hard-and-fast rule which we can use compare 2 specific Rabbis based on date of birth.
