To add to that, what I do after cutting off a piece from the big challah is then dip the big piece in salt and only then break off a small piece for myself and everyone else. (Nowadays that the bread itself is tasty the main reason to dip 3 times in salt is kabbalistic and I see no reason why dipping the big piece 3 times is a problem. When the bread was not so tasty then there was an inyan to dip each piece in salt.) Do you mind saying who your Rebbe is?

@user6591 Yay! I never saw it written anywhere (not that I've read everything) but I'm happy to see that I'm not the only one who has had this thought.

comment How much of this world is really ordained by Heaven?
I'd like to point out that there is a difference between something being decreed by God and God causing something to happen. It could be that God causes every individual leaf to fall the way it does and every spider to catch the fly it catches but that doesn't mean that God decreed that this spider should catch this fly. I believe that this is Rav Chaim Friedlander's position (based on the Ramchal and others. He also explains the Rambam this way.) in his sefer Sifsei Chaim.

I do every day. I'm not sure what you mean by a community where this is followed... this is not a community related halacha. As with everything else you'll find individuals who are aware of and follow more halachos/minhagim then others in the same community.

comment What's unique about the book Eglei Tal?
@Matt I was aksing because it seems like a particularly popular book and, in my experience, a popular halacha book is usually popular due to it's format (or something like format) and not because of the content. I wasn't really asking about the "need" rather the "attraction to".

comment Value of Forgotten Torah
I don't remember which gemarah but it says that you get reward for walking to the shiur and for the uncomfortable-ness experienced at the shiur (if it's crowded). I think this only applies to someone going to hear words of Torah, nit sure about learning oneself.

comment How should an Orthodox Jew respond to questioning by Conservative/Reform Jews?
My understanding is that the single most fundamental difference is the way Orthodox Jews regard the Talmud/Chazal and their place in defining what the Torah is (and what it's not) including practical laws and general perspectives (hashkafah). In terms of explaining such an idea and making it palpable to a non-Orthodox person... lets see what people answer.

@msh210 True. I am assuming that Rabbi's of a certain caliber would be acting consciously vis-a-vis an explicit mishna that seems to pertain to their situation.
