comment Why celebrate Lag Ba'Omer on the 33rd according to the MaHaRIL?
@Menachem If I had an idea, I'd have changed it. But obviously La"G B'Omer is on the 33rd. La"D would be the 34th. So... "Why celebrate the stopping of dying of R' Akiva's students on Lag (33) B'Omer?" but that's wordy.

...this title bothers me. I understand why it's written as such, but it's annoying.

comment How do rabbis explain the reason for the Spanish Expulsion. Why did the Jewish people deserve it
@MonicaCellio We tend to special-case national tragedies - the Churbans (I and II), various exiles, and the Holocaust come to mind. In each case, there are many who introspect and think how we (as a nation) failed.

comment Where did the sing-song chant that Jews often use while contrasting points come from?
I've heard this is from a mnemonic technique used for Talmud study - having a tune and cadence is better for memorization.

comment Responding to “that's not a Jewish name”
That sort of question itself is not an appropriate Jewish question. "My father's family is from Italy" seems like a reasonable answer to me.

comment If a non-jew steals is he liable to the death penalty?
Who is "he"? A Jew? A non-Jew? Also, by "obligated to die" do you mean "liable for the death penalty" or do you mean actually obligated (positive mitzvah) to kill himself/be killed?

comment Can a single-parent father be exempt from time-bound mitzvot?
@meir I think this post would be better (and less controversial) if it didn't focus on reasons that women aren't obligated to daven and instead answered the question about whether single-parent men must daven, ideally citing sources that back up that answer.

No offense to the poster, but how is this not off-topic?

comment What is so special about the 613 mitzvos?
@shlomo I'm confused how a mitvah can be d'oraita and not one of the 613 d'oraita mitzvot. Can you say specifically what you're talking about before asking for a general case?

comment Counting the omer with doubt before the fixed calendar
@DoubleAA if by "looking at a calendar" you mean "counting to 50" since neither Iyar nor Nisan were fixed. I guess at least someone counted, but not in a sefirah-related way.

So if they didn't count, how did they know when Shavuot was?
