comment Kibus (Laundry) During the Nine Days
I take it from your question that it must be your wife that does the family laundry!

Thank you. My conciseness sometimes bites back at me. I will edit my answer and elaborate.

Didn't you also borrow the gas to use?

comment Wearing New Clothes in Three Weeks
It's OK for undergarments/socks/PJ's. Keep in mind that laundering is still forbidden during the 9 days even for these garments. Yes, the issue is from Rosh Chodesh Av, the start of the "9 days". Plus, before Rosh Chodesh, all non-shehecheyanu new clothing is fine, too.

comment Food in bathroom
Just for clarification, when the gemara/poskim talk about "their" bathrooms, those were worse than ours because they retained waste. In brachos 26a, in order to answer a question, the gemara makes an ukimta that the case at hand is refering to a Parsa'i toilet where the waste drops away (not the norm for them). Like you said, the poskim debate if our toilets are like the Parsa'i toilets.

Sheasani Kirtzono is not midina d'gemara. Also, it could be it's not even the same nature of birchas shevach. The Aruch HaShulchan calls it "k'ain hatzdakas hadin shenivr'u kach".

Don't you say Brich Shmei d'Marei Alma 4x weekly? The Mishna Brura quotes Zohar many times as well. So I will throw the ball in your court to show an issur of "reading" Zohar.

Reading zohar is not the same as delving into essoteric areas of the Torah. I have read zohar many times for halachic purposes. As far as answering the question, I believe everything has been covered between AY's answer, my (YDK) answer and Yahu's comment. If you need a summary of the shach, post your interest here and I (or someone else) will try to post it when I have the shach in front of me.

comment Does listening to Torah content count as the mitzvah of Talmud Torah?
Not necessarily. Acc. to Aruch HaShulchan, there's a mitzvah, just the chachamim did not institute the (deoraysa) bracha for hirhur. In addition, would you say that Ezra was mesaken krias hatorah on Mon. & Thu. so that 3 olim won't go without Torah? I would say that even if hirhur balev is not chashuv enough to be called learning, hearing dibur is since the dibur makes it a chashuv learning. The same could be applied to reading written Torah according to the mechaber who holds writing is chashuv. Many argue with this mechaber and the MB says not to rely on writing alone.

comment Cutting Tefillin Retzuos
1. I think you understood this already, but my comment referred to the ink which does not have to be lishma. 2. If you have a pair of tefilin and you are painting them because you know they need to be black, this is lishma. A case of not lishma would be a goy painting them, like the MB brings there, or the person who is painting doesn't know these are straps for tefillin.

You need not spend the money/time getting "tefilin paint". Shoe polish already available in your house is fine.
