Why not give tzeddakah before shmittah? Dan, it seems the entire portion is referring to lending. The Rashi commenting on an allusion of the pasuk that one should initially gift, but the simple flow of words refers to a loan. |

How can God be just in light of Deuteronomy 23:3? @jake, either I am misreading you or you have a different answer. Your answer sounds like a religious caste system,- if you are born from a forbidden relationship, we place you in a lower caste. What I am saying is that a person born from such a relationship has a spiritual defect which precludes him from a spiritual bond with someone who is spiritually whole. |

Tefilin - broke left middle finger, and it's now splinted @Gabi, re your 1st question, I have already addressed- if the kesher is not tight, you haven't done the mitzva. but this can also be accomplished with the hankie. re your second question, the TMY is clearly talking about the upper arm. His point is that (acc. to some) so long as you have not wrapped the fingers, you have not done the full keshira. But he certainly isn't referring to the lower arm, or else the length of a strap would need to include those wrappings as well. |

Why is precedent set by individual rabbis, not courts? @SethJ, It seems to me that a court is no more than the rulings of individuals. The Torah was mechadesh that a mix of rulings is not a safek and that we go by the majority of those individual rulings. In a new case, there is no rov since we start from scratch. |

Lithuanian minhag for talis katan material If you are referring to the yeshivos of Slabodka and Mir, I would be surprised if they had specific personal minhagim, as students congregated there from many towns. |
