comment Seder advice when with people who aren't interested?
I think that is a great idea. You can introduce the concept of freedom from egypt as being freedom to serve God. You can then ask people to say one thing that they have freed themselves from this year and one thing they will choose to do with that freedom. Fantastic ideas!

comment Must EMTs and others rend Kriyah each time they see a patient die?
The geshe HaHaim doefinitely does this. THe Major difference is that NG will usually say this where as the GH usually will not point this out. Even in the particular case cited above we talks about the minhag of Ir Hakodesh Y"m. The causion was really only to make sure that the halakha one quotes is not said specifically as the minhag of yerushalayim.

comment Why doesn't the OU put DE on food packages anymore?
@Will just to clarify, one should not eat in the same bite or at a table set with meat dishes. The way to do it is to clear the table or move to the living room for desert etc.

I have at times brought out oreos after a shabbos meal at my home and people were astounded that they are not actually dairy. I shudder to think what is actually in that creamy center :)

The chalenge of quoting the Nitei Gavriel in this context is that he records mainly the minhag (practice) of Jerusalem. Which doesn't always match up with the practices of the rest of the world. Rav Moshe would agree that an MD does not have to tear kriya if the garment is not ones own. In fact it would be forbidden because one is not allowed to destroy another's property.

comment Is Hebrew the mother of all languages spoken today in the world?
WE dont know for sure what language the three forefathers spoke. We do know that the Torah transmitted there words as hebrew. We know that the meaning of the words in torah have meant the the same things for thousands of years because there are written records of commentary and discussion dating from the second century. We also know that some elements of the Torah remained ambiguous until much more recently which is why there are still commentaries being written today. None the less the written/ orally transmitted tradition dates back many millenia so we can be sure of its meaning.

I will start with the easy stuff: Judeo-Arabic is the language that was spoken and written in by the likes of Maimonides in fact most of his great philosophical/theological works were written in Judeo-Arabic. "Most of Maimonides's works were written in Judeo-Arabic. However, the Mishneh Torah was written in Hebrew? j.mp/I286fH Ladino is is the spanish equivalent to Yiddish in the eastern European countries. It is a conglomeration of Spanish, hebrew and other dialects which were spoken by the local Jewish population see j.mp/I28D1h.

We can be sure that hebrew today is different than ancient hebrew. There is biblical hebrew, rabbinic hebrew and there are different letter shapes for each one. The basics of the language are the same much like if you read Shakespeare you would understand most of it and technically the language he wrote in would be correct today. None the less it is a bit different. A second point is that the Hebrew wasnt always a spoken language for many years the vernacular was aramaic, or judao arabic, or ladino, or yiddish hebrew has recently become a spoken language again.

@msh210 the shulkhan arukh does not make a mention of the need for a chumash but the rema would require it if it is to be used at all.
