What is the status of a married woman without a kesuba? Just to add a clarification to this excellent answer: replacing the kesuba is completely the husband's obligation. He must replace it as soon as possible, though they continue to have the same marital status until he does. |

Why do we say Mazel Tov? Shouldn't we thank Hashem? A bit unlikely. "nose" and "nasal" both come from the Latin word for nose, "nasus". |

Does Judaism consider virginity to be a virtue? This argument would be a lot more convincing if the high priest himself had to be married for the first time (thus, "no one else but the two of them..."). However, we know that the high priest specifically does not have this requirement, and may in fact have taken a second wife before the Day of Atonement rituals, which would presumably be putting him in a more complex place, spiritually, again according to this argument. |

Were Maftir Honors in 19th Century different from today? You seem to assume that he couldn't have read the haftarah himself for some reason (his having been away so long?). I'm not sure that would have been a problem. |

3 year olds lighting a shabbat candle @David: That would be a terrific question to ask on its own. I would surmise that halacha in general favors a contemporary rabbi's psak over a talmudic source, especially in cases of custom such as this one, but it would be interesting to have a full discussion, with sources. |

Megilas Esther by day - why is it done after Kriyas HaTorah? Quite right - I wouldn't accept it either without the source :). I'll keep looking... |

Megilas Esther by day - why is it done after Kriyas HaTorah? Like I said, I heard this in a class, and unfortunately don't know the sources. The Talmud Yerushalmi 74b says: "שאין קורין בכתבי הקודש אלא מן המנחה ולמעלן", but I can't find a written source right now regarding the morning service. |

Why do we think of the korban pesach as a sheep, not as a goat? Well, I can't say what people in general think of as the korban. At the time of the mishna, and the composition of the chad gadya, though, at least some people thought of it as a goat... :) |

Why do we think of the korban pesach as a sheep, not as a goat? I guess I meant to challenge the premise of the question. Maybe it would have been more appropriate as a comment. |

Saving Parking Spots There is a difference, though, between having the potential to acquire something, and actually doing it. I don't think anyone would doubt that Shimon could actually pay for the spot on behalf of Reuven, and Levi would have no rights to it. The real question in my mind is not whether Shimon can stand in for Reuven (which he could as a messenger in this case), but rather whether one can hold on to the parking space for a few minutes without paying for it. |
