comment Is it forbidden for a woman to learn Gemara?
What if my posek is Rav Ovadia Yosef, or Rav Bentzion Abba-Shaul or Rav Ovadia Hadaya or Rav Yosef Kaphach or Rav Mordechai Eliyahu or Rav Ezra Attia or one of the many many many other poskim I may legitimately follow whose opinion you neglected? This isn't necessarily a psak halacha for me! Why is your answer any better than HachamGabriel's?

comment Permissibility of speaking foreign languages?
@MonicaCellio In some places theres a widespread practice to drive to synagogue on shabbat. In others, theres a widespread practice to eat new grain before pesach. In yet other communties theres a practice to eat chametz on pesach. Doesn't mean that halacha permits it.

comment Which sephardic groups forbid eating rice during Pesach and why?
Ive heard that Hummus sounds like Hametz, so they made it assur (but i have no written source for that). I don't know when the beans-custom began or how widespread it is. Don't be surprised if Persian Jews adopted customs out of ignorance- certain cities lacked proper Torah leadership for several decades. Incidents such as this also impaired the transfer of minhagim from generation to the next.

I've seen a Persian custom that permits rice but forbids beans (and chickpeas)- seemingly the exact opposite.
