comment How is gender halachically determined?
At the risk of either sounding ignorant or presumptuous, I would assume that halachically we would go by what the gender was when the person was born. The simple fact of the matter is that a woman, even if she's medically unable to give birth to a child, is built the same way as a woman who is. If God were to 'open her canals', so to speak, she would again be able to give birth to a child. A man, no matter how much he 'feels like a woman', would never be able to do so without either some medical breakthrough or a change in his bodily structure.

comment How are pre-creation >4000 BCE human civilization and pre-flood >2300 BCE civilizations that continued reconciled with Judaism?
For what its worth, I have pretty much the same questions as you do, even more so that many people take the idea that the world is literally less than 6,000 years old. I refuse to believe that G-d is the ultimate prankster, waiting for the right moment to tell everyone "Gotcha!"

comment Is it possible for God to have rejected us, even in theory?
If it was a 'regular' author, I could understand that; but the author is supposed to be someone who is infused with the spirit of God. If this person even entertained the idea that God could 'reject' us, wouldn't that also allow for the author to follow it to its logical conclusion that God HAS rejected us?

comment What is the significance of bears in Judaism? Why has Dov (or Dov Ber) been such a common Jewish name?
Ber is also yiddish for Bear. Says the person who is named Dov Ber ;)

comment Can you do benching for 3 people when one person does not know what to say in response?
Thanks for the answer, but I felt that the answer you gave based on the shulchan aruch was based on someone who knows what to say but refuses to do so, as opposed to someone who doesn't know what to say. If someone refuses to answer, if they are coerced (!) they can reply; a person who doesn't know what to say, even when forced, still wouldn't be able to answer (unless you gave him a transliterated book and pointed out to him what needed to be said)
