On Chanuka a poor person is required to sell his clothing or collect Tzedaka in order to buy candles or oil and wicks. The same as on Pesach a poor person is required to sell his clothing or collect Tzedaka to drink the 4 cups of wine. |

The Jews of Izmir, Turkey would use their leftover oil from Chanukah to light a small oil lamp to use for Bedikas Chometz on the night before Pesach. (Avraham Galanti, Minhagei Izmir. Cited in Levinson. Dinim V'Minhagim, page 173) A common modern custom is to burn the oil with the Chometz on Erev Pesach. Credit: Mishpacha Kolmus #15 Chanukah 5771 |
