The Machaber in OC Siman 470 writes that there is an opinion that holds a woman that is a bachorah should fast on Taanis Bechoros. The Rema adds there however that this is not the minhag. The Rema however in Sif Beis does say that when a Father is himself a bachor and this couple has a son that is also a bachor but still a katan that the Mother should fast in place of her son (Since the Father is already fasting because of himself.) Why is it that in this case the Rema says a woman should fast for her son (when the Father is unable to do so) but not for herself?

(The M"B in Sif-Katan 9 does write that poskim say the woman doesn't have to fast in this case as well. However I'm asking according to the Rema himself paskens.)

You may as well also ask the reason why the Rema rules that a non-firstborn father would fast for a firstborn son even though he doesn't fast for himself. – Fred Mar 18 at 14:23

Because that was the minhag? – Double AA Mar 18 at 14:27
@Fred You can ask that as a separate question if you want! I'm bringing up the point in regards to women and this fast. – Yehoshua Mar 18 at 14:32

I don't really understand the question. Are you asking why she should fast for her b'chor son even though she wouldn't fast for herself were she a b'chora? (An answer might be "because the son can't fast and someone should fast for him".) Or are you asking why she doesn't fast for herself as a b'chora even though she'd fast for b'chor son? (You answer that in your question: "this is not the minhag".) Or what? – msh210 Mar 18 at 14:50

@Yehoshua, right now, this question looks like "Why, according to the Rema does a woman fast in one case even though she doesn't fast in another case in which she's in a completely different situation?" It seems to me that to make this a strong question, you have to give a reason why you think the two cases should have the same din, other than that they both involve a woman. – Isaac Moses Mar 18 at 15:53
